In America, there are many rituals, one being the use of a device, enohp. Everyone seems to follow this ritual, mothers, fathers, even little kids. It is almost like no one can live their life without it. The enohp wakes you up, stores all of your important information, keeps up with your events, helps you to stay in contact with others socially, and entertains you during your spare time.

It is kind of like the enohp has this culture under its control for the worse. The first thing that most people do in the morning when they wake up is check to see what their enohp has to say to them. They become consumed with responding to the enohp than handling other morning duties. America spends more time following this ritual than spending quality time with other people. They would rather use the enohp to communicate than to actually speak to someone face to face as opposed to through something handheld and miniature.

People would even risk their lives just to use this device. When they should be focusing on things like the road ahead, they are checking to see if the enohp has something new to say to them. This ritual has caused many car accidents, injuries, and even deaths because it is so consuming. There are even laws out to protect people from harm while driving and using their device, but many people don’t listen and continue on with this practice of using the enohp every hour, minute, second of the day.

Money is being lost just to be a part of this ritual. A new device is always coming out, and every time it does, people spend their money just to get this “next big thing” that contains the same basic functions as the one they already have just with a different name. Some do not realize that owners of this ritual know exactly what to say to get you to become a part of their company and lock you down with them for at least two years. They buy into it thinking that it is just a harmless device that will not affect them at all.

This ritual has so many people under control that if they happen to misplace their device; it is almost like their whole world has ended. The searching for this device will not stop until it is either found or misplaced. The same thing happens if the device happens to break. How are they to communicate now? Keep in touch with others? Know when their next doctor’s appointment is? After being consumed for so long, it is kind of like the skills that come with communicating with others face to face have totally left your brain and all you know is enohp.

This ritual will continue to take over America and the future generations to come. Maybe in the future more things will be done with this device. Who knows, next you may even be able to take college classes through it.

I believe that you should always keep in touch with your family. Family is the only thing that you have left when your friends walk away, when you find yourself in a tough situation, or when you just need someone to lean on.

I believe that you should always keep in touch with your family. No matter the differences that you may be going through, or the distance that may be in between you, you still share the same blood.

I believe that you should always keep in touch with your family. To let someone know that they are on your mind could make their day even better.

When I was younger, I had a great-grandmother that I would only see every few summers. I lived in Georgia and she lived in Tennessee. She always called me, sent me gifts and spoiled me every time I visited. While everyone slept in the den on blow up mattress, I slept in the room with her. She would take me to go see movies and buy me new outfits all of the time.

My great-grandmother acted as the peacemaker on my mom’s side of the family. She brought everything together and kept us close instead of letting us argue and fight. As she watched a few of her daughters pass, she was there for all of her grandkids and great-grandkids as a shoulder to cry on.

Well, one day my great-grandmother started getting sick and was hospitalized. She let the family know that she wanted to speak to me and that I should call her. Every day I thought about calling, but I just kept finding other things to do. I would always put it off until it was too late. The day that I thought I would call her, was the day that she passed. I had months to call and check on her knowing that she wanted to speak to me one last time, but I never stopped to make time.

Fortunately, I did get a second chance to make time for a loved one, when I found out that my great-grandmother on my father’s side was sick with Alzheimer’s disease. I spent time with her whenever I could. Any time I was in town I would help my grandmother watch her mother and just sit and talk with her. She did not always remember who I was, but she would smile so big whenever I walked into the room. When she passed, I did not have to feel regretful or like a horrible grandchild because this time I made an effort to stay connected and keep in touch with my family member.

I believe that you should always keep in touch with your family. You never know when you won’t have them there anymore to stand by your side. We are not here on Earth forever. It is better to cherish the time you have with your loved ones now before it becomes too late.

I Believe…

I believe that it is better to give than to receive.

I believe that you should always be forgiving, because you have to forgive to be forgiven.

I believe that you should keep in contact with your family members no matter the distance. Friends will come and go, but family is permanent, they will be with you forever.

I believe that you should never think that you are better than anyone else. The only person that you are better than is the “old” youI believe that there is one God, eternally existent in three persons.

I believe that you should love everyone, regardless of social differences.

I believe that you should try to do everything without complaining. Complaining never makes a task easier, it just makes you think about how much you don’t want to do something and that only produces more complaining.

I believe that you should always be/have a friend that you can count on or hold you accountable.

I believe that anything is possible and that nothing is impossible.

I believe in miracles.I believe that you should never give up on your dreams, it is never too late.

I believe that you should treat others how you would like to be treated.

I believe that perfect love casts out all fear.

I believe that everything that happens in your life, happens for a reason. It is all setting you up for greatness.

I believe that if you believe in yourself, work hard enough, and keep God first, you can achieve greatness.

For my showcase writing, I chose three different pieces that I think represents me and my favorite type of writing the most. I picked my Nacirema Piece, “Enohp”, This I believe, and my Personal Credo. I enjoy writing creative pieces and things about myself more than I enjoy writing academic pieces, that is why I feel that these three correctly represent me.

Enohp is a creative piece in response to an article about “strange rituals” that are practiced here in America. So for my piece, I wrote about the use of phones and how they are taking over our world for the worst to say the least. The creativity part is included in this because I had to come up with ways to disguise exactly what ritual I was talking about without it being too obvious. It’s a little challenging to make something so normal to us, strange. But that was the fun part :)

Enohp

This I believe represents my more personal side. I really enjoy writing about my own experiences and things that I care about, so this was also fairly easy in some aspects. Writing this piece was almost like keeping a journal. I got to talk about something really personal to me, such as a death in my family a few years ago and how it changed my entire family’s life. If this paper represents me in no other way, I do know that I shows how much my family means to me and how I now take more responsibility in keeping in touch more with my older relatives.

Just Keep In Touch

Personal Credo

My personal credo is also… well, personal! I didn’t get to share all my beliefs, but I did share most of them. It was pretty cool to sit down and think about what I believe in and why I hold those beliefs to be true. It was kind of like looking at myself in the mirror and realizing what I truly stand for and also what I don’t stand for.
